TAHITI
Duration: 43 minutes

In this episode of the ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC series, we visit one of the most romantic places in the world. We discover Marlon Brando's secret island hideaway and learn the dangerous art practised by the local population of hitch-hiking a ride on the back of sharks.

Tahiti has attracted seafaring adventurers for centuries, from Captain James Cook and the luckless William Bligh to the French painter, Paul Gauguin and, more recently some giants of Hollywood like Marlon Brando. Like most other visitors, each came to discover the magic of Tahiti - an archipelago of literally hundreds of small islands each set in its own lagoon behind a barrier coral reef.

Governed by the French, the country is a rich blend of laid back Polynesian life and Parisian sophistication.

Large plantations grow tropical fruits and coconuts and its one of the world's largest producers of the precious vanilla bean, the fragrance of which hangs delightfully in the air. It is also home to the magnificent black pearl one of the most sought after gems in the world.
