Western Samoa, it is said by the inhabitants, is "the Cradle of Polynesia". Of all the Pacific island nations it is Western Samoa which has retained most powerfully, its traditional tribal life. Having adopted some of the missionaries teachings, the Samoans remain utterly committed to the "faa samoa" - the Samoan way. The Samoan affection for the family's herd of pigs (of great value throughout the island) sometimes leads a visitor to the conclusion they are valued more than the humans. Renowned as fierce fighters, Samoans these days flex their muscles on the rugby field.
